Larry Ellison and America’s Cup…the sport we’ll never watch

A recent Grantland article describes Larry Ellison’s current restructuring of  America’s Cup, the major sailing race that looks like one long Breitling commercial. Ellison, the CEO of Oracle, is taking huge strides to bring the sport into the forefront of American television sets.

There are two major takeaways from this article. One, apparently the winner of the previous America’s Cup is given the opportunity to change multiple aspects of the race for the following year – i.e. location, course, sailing machinery used, etc. This is a f*cking incredible rule. Albeit a rule I should have already been privy to, but it’s still awesome.

The second point, which is more of a reaction to the Grantland piece, is that America will never adopt another sport into its prime time viewing. There’s an abundance of entertainment, and the sporting world is already saturated. The MLS tried to push soccer, WWF tried its hand at football, Red Bull at air racing and the VERSUS Network at bull riding. There’s just no room. All were failures.
